[HERALD INTERVIEW]Singer presents his version of 'Winter Sonata'
It sounds like a cliche, but for Koreans, Japan is a country that is close yet distant. And an opportunity to present what we have to them through a performance is meaningful in itself. "It is an opportunity that was hard to pass," said Im Tae-kyung, the lead actor of the musical version of the all-time Korean hit TV drama "Winter Sonata," which will start its month-long performance in Tokyo from tomorrow.
Another reason this crossover tenor decided to participate in this show is related with its premiere in Sapporo, Japan. When it was unveiled earlier this year, Im had a hard time personally.
"I couldn't stop coughing before the first performance and it just wouldn't stop, and I barely made it through the presentation," recalled Im.

At first, he thought it was a cold but it went on for two months, although he constantly went to see doctors. "What made me nervous was that I am a 'stage person' and even when I had a cold, everything was fine when I went on a stage," he said. Later, when he got back in Seoul, he was introduced an expert in respiratory diseases and found out that his whole immune system was down, and his vocal organs were reacting to the tiniest irritations.
"I guess having been part of two major productions in a row has taken its toll on me," said Im who starred in last year's big-budget musical "Sword of Fire," an adaptation of an epic cartoon by Kim Hye-rin.
Following the much-hyped musical, Im took another daring step to assume the role that was originally played by Bae Yong-joon on television.
The musical was well received in Japan although he is the first to admit his lack of experience in acting. "And as it was close to a preview, the whole performance was kind of immature," Im said in an interview with The Korea Herald.
He was disheartened at first with a relatively lukewarm audience, or what he thought was lukewarm. "Japanese are different in terms of expressing their feelings. I was not satisfied with my performance, so maybe I was being self-conscious, but after a while I realized that they were applauding quietly even after all our orchestra members had left their seats."
When the producers of "Sword of Fire" approached him, Im took a leap of faith (after two and a half months of persuasion) despite his lack of acting skills.
"But only when I actually started did I learn how hard acting was, as you have to be honest and true to sensibility, and at the same time calculate certain techniques to communicate that feeling to the audience," he said.
It is both an exciting yet challenging task, and the singer acknowledges that his perspective of acting has widened. But he declined to label himself as a musical actor. "I have been interested in this genre, but I am a singer, and I am just trying to do my best now," said Im.
As he said earlier, Im considers himself a natural when it comes to being on the stage. He has sung in front of an audience since he was four, winning countless contests and performing in festivals and concerts, and shared a stage with soprano Jo Su-mi.
He majored in vocal music since junior high school, and he released an album "Sentimental Journey" in 2004, which topped classic music charts in Korea. Im has also participated in original soundtracks for television dramas such as "Prince of the Legend."
Im, however, simply describes himself as "a singer who is happy when he sings." "I want my songs to have a certain message or feeling, and hope I can deliver them to whoever is listening," he said.
"When put into words, these sound grand, or complex, but at the end of the day, when a gentleman or a lady with a life of experience, and no knowledge of music, happens to listen to my song and nods, saying that 'hey, this lad has a good voice,' then that says it all for me," said Im.

A few days ago, she brought a pumpkin gruel for our Winter Sonata member , so that they was very happy...
At this time, she made them so happy again by rice cakes and sweet drink made from fermented rice.
Therefore, only six of members went to have a dinner.
I was so thankful that I couldn't see her face.
Because I heard she had toiled hard for bring the pumpkin gruel at that time...
When I saw big boxs, thankful thought and another emotions more than gratitude became rose in my heart.

I made a Chinese blog of Im tae-kyung
I made a chinese blog of Im tae-kyung last night.
But it is difficult to use chinese in internet.
And I don't write good Chinese. So.. I think my chinese is terrible..
I tried to use a chinese translator. But it didn't work well. Because there are big different between Korean and Chinese, word order.
I often use Japanese translator for word order of korean and japanses is same.
So I can make a japanese blog easily. But chinses.. It's too hard.. ㅠ_ㅠ
But I still try to make chinese blog for I let many chinese know him.

Winter sonata performing in sapporo
This tv program is about the musical "Winter sonata" based on KBS drama "winter sonata (겨울연가)". Yun suk-ho director of this drama also produced this musical as a general art director.
Im tae-kyung played a role of Main character "Jun-shang" who lose a memory of lover, "You-jin". I think his voice match the character who has sorrow of leaving his lover because of death by terrible accident.
The big different between Musical and TV Drama is a conclusion.
A conclusion of TV drama is happy ending which Yun director didn't want, but fans want. However Musical's coclusion is sorrowful tragedy which he wants.

Im tae-kyung sang " All I ask of you" with so many female vocalist. But so many times he sang this song with Kim so-hyun. What do you about her voice? Does it match with him?
I think.. a little than another female vocalist.
Gethemane.. Wow.. It's wonderful!! Because of him, I meet this song at first time in my life.
I think it was fortune for me. Before I heard this song, I don't like "Jesus Christ Superstar".
Actually, I didn't know this song exists in this musical.
But after I heard that song, wow.. It was great!! I love it! And I keep falling in love with him and his song.. !!
When he sing "Any dream will do", he is very cute and lovely like a baby~~!! ^0^
As he sing each song, his feeling is very different. Sometimes, it's sad, some times it's happy and lovely, and some time it's powerful. For this side, I like him.
Because his song give me very different experience that I never have before.
'The Starlight Express" is rare male vocal duet. He sang it with Korean famous musical actor, You jung-han.
You jung-han is well-known as a main actor of Musical " Jekyll and hyde".

Beautiful TK!!!
He went to make a filme of documentary for Edinbrugh Festival Fringe.
During ten days, he stay in England with documentary director.
That director became like him as a human.
He said, " I meet a good person, and good friend named Im tae-kyung. He is younger than me, but I feel him a friend. He is very kind and has a good mind. Also he has various talent .. he sing very well,likes a exercise and speaks English very well."
Also he became like tae-kyung's korea fan.
He said, " Tae-kyung's fans are very kind and I think they are good people. So I give them picture of tae-kyung that I took. "
Those picture is that he gave us.
Tae-kyung has ability of making people his side.
About Musical "The Sword of Fire" part 1.
Part 1. story : about 2600 years ago, while korea was going through the transition of Bronze Age to Iron Age, Ara, the daughter of an Amur blacksmith, meets an Amur warrior, Garahan Asa. The two fall in love but become separated in the war between Amur and Kareumaki. Ara deciedes to make a steel sword as she dreams of meeting Asa again.
